Viking-Age Hoods
wool, linen, cotton

These hoods are recreations of a woolen hood found in Skjoldehamn, Norway. The hood is from the early Middle Ages, and is both useful and fashionable. I have written more about my attempts to recreate this wonderful piece of clothing.

This black hood with the red, yellow, and blue trim is a personal triumph, as I wove the trim-band using a small heddle in the style of Kerstin Neumüller. If you're interested in band-weaving (which you should be if you know what's good for you) then I absolutely recommend picking up her book Simple Weave.

In the Middle Ages and beyond, hoods were separate garments worn over shirts, coats, and cloaks. This means that your chest area is double or even triple-covered with warm fabric! I find that wearing one of these hoods is much warmer than the hood attached to a sweatshirt or jacket.

You can sometimes find my hoods for sale at North House Folk School and the Arts Center of Saint Peter. Contact me if you're interested in commissioning a piece!
